XP total for the month (possible) is 5.
1 XP for a lit
3 XP for being active (starting at least one scene, and finishing at least one scene per month)
1 XP for doing something to further your goals in some way (Whether IC or OOC). (Most people will earn this, just don't be sitting in five scenes in your living room, please.)
The ST will also give XP for 'encounters completed' 'stories finished' or 'arcs closed', as in Dungeons and Dragons.
Players should keep an XP Earned string in their forum, seperate from XP Spent. Players are responsible for their own XP and keeping track of how much they earned in any given month.
Again, cheating only damages the game for yourself, and the ST will check periodically.
This is just your general XP. All characters get this, both Kin and Garou alike.
Read carefully here, this is a new system that we're using for this game because of some of the issues with Renown.
Now, on TOP of this, to avoid having under-powered higher ranked characters, and to make sure everyone reaches relatively equivalent power levels when they rank up:
When you Rank up, you will get free dots in Gifts, Attributes, and Abilities.
This is on top of your monthly XP that you'll receive for writing and posting and the like. There are not numbers on this yet because it will have to be determined by the gap between character XP and the book's predicted required stats for each rank, which can only be determined when we see how fast you guys rank up! Rest assured the rules will be the same for all characters once I have an idea of the power level you'll need to reach. Its possible, depending on how long RP takes, that you won't need the boost. Just keep this in mind.
Now, this is not without caveat that it will come with RP, some work, and negotiation with me.
The process will go something like this:
I will say, "Ok, player, you have enough renown to rank up. We'll do all the RP stuff for your challenge in a bit, but first, let me know what are the things you want to buy with your free points? What direction is this character going?"
Then, once you've worked all that out and hash it out with me in your private forum, I will make a challenge that fits what you want to learn. I'll touch on as many of the skills, abilities, and gift learning as I can during your challenge. Maybe we can't include everything, that's ok, you still get your points as long as you complete the challenge. Anything leftover can be RPed out in another scene with me, another character, or in a literary.
This way, your character is guaranteed to keep up with correct power levels for Rank, you all get meaningful and interesting challenges, and your character develops in specific directions for roles and ideas that you have.
Kinfolk characters do not need gifts or super high stats, so they will progress with normal XP gain. The XP gain your Garou gets from monthly posting can be used for anything else that doesn't happen during a challenge, or anything else you might want to buy as it comes up.
Backgrounds are earned not with XP, but with RP, as per the book, and are a special case sort of RP opportunity that can be gained from actions in already occurring scenes, specific scenes set up to gain these backgrounds, sometimes literaries, and general downtime actions that are recorded in your character section.
