If You Put It On Your Sheet...

You better know what it does. And, in the case of flaws in particular, you'd better do it.
This probably should go without saying, but its come up too many times to be coincidence for me. Some merits, backgrounds, or gifts look cool and might compliment your mechanics. I really couldn't care less - if it doesn't fit into the story you've written for your character, or it isn't written into your character's story at all, it will be removed from your sheet. This is somewhat flexible upon creation because I know all too well that sometimes a character needs some breaking in before the story gets completely crystallized. I'm talking about long term failure to develop the story.
Same goes for flaws, maybe particularly for flaws. If you're not playing it, your sheet will be adjusted accordingly. Consider playing a Metis very, very carefully. They're called deformities for a reason, and if your 'deformity' doesn't hinder you in some way, the concept isn't really a Metis, is it?
If you have Purebreed and you haven't written out the rudiments of your family history and can't explain it to the curious NPCs asking about it, it will be removed from your sheet. Same goes for merits, Ancestors, Fetishes, or anything else that might require some significant explaining. Most significantly, this includes resources. We're a bunch of wolves living in the most isolated wild locations on earth. How ARE you rolling in money? You're probably not, but if you are, I need to know how that's set up. I know it sucks to think about because I hate thinking about that stuff as well, but if it bugs you that much, play a lupus who doesn't even know what money is.
Seems harsh? Well, that's because some of these things are very, very powerful, and if players don't put in the work to have them, then they become meaningless, and power creep takes over the game and we all ascend into a realm of ridiculousness that's no fun for anyone.
Now, the best way to avoid losing your hard earned points on this is to work with the ST. Want a cool fetish but not sure how to work the story in? Think high resources makes sense for your character but you really don't know how that level of wealth actually works? That's what I'm here for. We can work it out so it works for your story, and for the game and then we're all happy. Just please don't leave these things hanging on your sheet with no effort put into them. I love working on cool details like this, so its no burden if you're just not sure how to make it all work for both mechanics and role play - I'd love to help!
